I was listening to a favorite audiobook this weekend - Making friends with your Mind w/ Pema Chodron - and Pema said something that hit me like a ton of bricks...
"This is prime time"
She goes on to laughingly say "THIS is prime time??" (like, no way, this can't possibly be the prime!), and then again, emphatically, "Yes, this is prime time".
We always think there is better than here, next is better than now, and so we wait on our lives.
✨ Once I get a little more comfortable in my job, then I will....
✨ Once I lose these last 15 lbs, then I'm going to....
✨ If I had a boyfriend/partner/husband/wife, then I could.....
✨ Once the kids are in school full time, then I can finally....
We've all said some version of this. Probably on repeat. I know I have.
A big one for me involved getting my doctoral degree and the resulting effect it had on my self-worth until I had it.
✨ Once I finish this degree, then I can feel established and respected
I don't need to tell you how that felt for the 9 years it took me to get it!
I was missing out on the opportunity to cultivate those feelings in the now. Exactly where I was.
AND - not to be a buzzkill - but getting there isn't a magic pill for lifelong happiness and positive self-talk.
✨ Losing the weight doesn't permanently change your self-image
✨ Getting the new purse/car/home/wardrobe doesn't forever quiet the negative self-talk (that's why we keep seeking more and more!)
✨ Getting the promotion doesn't automatically give you unwavering confidence at work
Those same insecurities and self-doubts will keep following you.
After getting my degree, there was a definite sense of accomplishment and pride, but it was short lived, and I quickly found myself seeking out the next thing.
✨ So, this didn't make me feel accomplished and respected in the long-term the way I thought it would, what can I do next that will?
And on it goes.
I didn't have the right thoughts (yet!) to support feeling differently about myself. That's what happens to many of us.
And then it doesn't matter what we do, how much money we make, what size jeans we wear, what our partner looks like..... because our thoughts are still centered around lack, and not good enough, and everyone else is smarter/better/prettier/funnier/happier etc...
UGHHH!
Let's change the perspective, and view these words, "This is prime time" as a reminder and an invitation to be here. To do something now, that we otherwise would have waited on.
Imagine a life where you feel proud, worthy, and energized when you wake up in the morning. A life where you:
✨Take a single step toward creating that online business you've dreamed about
✨Enjoy date night even though you don't like the way your stomach looks in that shirt
✨Go to that yoga class even though you have no idea what you're doing or if you'll even be able to last the full 60 minutes
✨Sign up for the photography class you've been putting off because you didn't have the right camera
✨Give yourself a big vote of confidence and and sign up for a life-changing program, like Life... On Purpose ;)
Don't wait to start living.
Start now. Show up. Show up for you. Because you're ready to do big things with your life. Now. Not then, not later. NOW.
Motivation follows action. Start somewhere. Don't wait for that illusive there.
Be here.
Remember, THIS IS PRIME TIME.
✨ ✨ We dig deep into the power of presence, action, awareness, and much more in my upcoming program Life... On Purpose!
